Northeast Sun Grant Competitive Grants Program
The Sun Grant mission is to focus the intellectual capacity of the region’s land grant universities in partnership with the private sector to enhance national energy security through the development, distribution and implementation of bio-based energy technologies, promote bio-based diversification and environmental sustainability of the region’s agriculture, and promote opportunities for bio-based economic diversification in rural communities in assisting the region and the nation move toward greater energy independence.
The Northeast Sun Grant Initiative (NE-SGI) has formed a competitive grants program serving the Northeast Sun Grant states. The NESGI Competitive Grants Program has been designed to support research, education and outreach projects in the strategic areas of biologically-based power (BioPower), biologically-based fuels (BioFuels), and biologically-based non-food products (BioProducts). The program serves qualified institutions that address the three strategic goals elucidated in the 2004 NESGI Roadmap, and the 2011 NESGI Roadmap Update, e.g., BioFuels, BioPower and BioProducts. Each strategic goal has 4 enabling or overarching activities: Biomass Feedstock, BioProcessing, System Integration and Marketing/Policy/Economics. Current funding for the competitive grants program originates from the US Department of Transportation and therefore has a strong emphasis on the biofuels area.
The Northeast Region Steering Committee members meet annually to develop the main themes and focus areas for the RFA. Larry Walker serves as science advisor but is not a voting member on the committee.
